The Tiers

Each tier is a band of scale with its own kinds of systems — and its own Sapiens Scientia platform. Health lives at the smallest scales of the body, society at the collective scale, and Earth systems at the planetary scale.

Tier I

Nanosystems

Particles to molecules · 10⁻¹⁸–10⁻⁹ m

The fundamental scale. Matter resolves into its constituents — elementary particles, atoms, and the molecules they bond into. This is the substrate from which everything larger on the ladder is assembled.

Tier II

Microsystems

Cells & microbes · 10⁻⁷–10⁻⁵ m

The cellular scale. Life resolves into cells and the microbes, bacteria, and viruses that share the body — the smallest living and near-living units on the ladder.

Tier III

Mesosystems

Organisms · 10⁻⁴–10¹ m

The organismal scale — the scale of a single living body. Multicellular life, mammals, and Homo sapiens itself. This is the scale a human directly inhabits, and the reference point the entire ladder is read from.

Tier IV

Macrosystems

Cities & systems · 10¹–10⁶ m

The collective scale. Many humans, coordinated by institutions and infrastructure: nations, legal and economic systems, healthcare, technology, energy, transport, and the built and digital environment. Society as a system.

Tier V

Megasystems

Planet & star · 10⁷–10¹¹ m

The planetary scale. The Earth systems that contain everything below them — atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, biosphere, soils, and climate — and the Sun that powers them. The boundary conditions of all human life.

Why a Ladder

The platforms are not separate sciences stacked side by side. They are slices of one continuous ladder of scale — the same world, studied at the level where its behavior actually lives. Salus works near the bottom and middle, Societas in the collective band, Terra at the top.
